Sara A Goico, Ph.D.

About

I am currently a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the Los Angeles Unified School District Early Start Program. I held a University of California President’s and National Science Foundation SBE Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles. I received my PhD in Anthropology (linguistic) in 2019 from the University of California, San Diego. My research focuses on language and social interaction when participants have asymmetric sensory access. My research brings together ethnographic methods with the microanalysis of video recordings of everyday interactions.

Over the last 15 years, I have conducted fieldwork in Iquitos, Peru with deaf local signers who do not have sustained access to the linguistic resources of their communities. Along with my research activities, I worked with the Iquitos community to establish a deaf school that now provides these children with access to Peruvian Sign Language. An ongoing research project investigates language socialization in the deaf school. While at UCLA, I am spearheading a new study on deaf education in Southern California.
